To the best of my knowledge, the ActiveX documents are safe to run on your computer. They are not designed to access the hard drive (unless you instruct them to save a report to a file, in which case that's all they will do). I have tested them on mine.

O.K., what's the catch? Most of these programs are complementary products that go with books that Ganesha is promoting. You don't need the books to make them work, but they make the books more useful. For example, if you are teaching statistical process control, you can use the SPC software with Levinson and Tumbelty, SPC Essentials and Productivity Improvement: A Manufacturing Approach.

Important:

ActiveX programs require Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 (Service Pack 2 or higher) or version 5 to operate.(download for free from Microsoft). They are ActiveX documents from Visual Basic 5.0. JavaScripts will run on Netscape Navigator/Communicator or Internet Explorer. I have not yet been able to get these programs to work with Internet Explorer 3.0, but I have run them on two different computers with IE 4.0. Comments are welcome. Send Mail webmaster@ganesha.org

ActiveX Troubleshooting note: Microsoft Developer Network Library, April 1999

A dialog box with the following messages appear in Internet Explorer:

   Opening file <ActiveX Document>.VBD
   What would you like to do with this file?
   Open it or Save it to disk.

Resolution 4:
This error occurs because the Visual Basic 5.0 Run-time Library (MSVBVM50.DLL) is not installed. This will most likely occur if the Internet Explorer safety level is set to High. Set the Internet Explorer safety level to Medium or None.

I have deliberately saved the spreadsheets as older Excel (or Quattro Pro) formats, to make them readable by newer versions of Excel, Quattro Pro, and Lotus software.
